When Rupert and I travel together around the farm, whether it is a walk in the woods or checking the cattle, it can seem like we are experiencing very different views. I tend to look down, at the spider webs, the collecting leaves, the footprints of various critters along the well-travelled corridors…while Rupert looks around at the fences, the pastures, the woodlot. Recently, as we were moving the cattle, I came upon this very large, vibrant blue dragonfly, and was more than happy that I had my gaze cast downward as usual.
The wing span was close to 4 inches, and I was immediately reminded of the great prehistoric ancestors of these modern-day insects, whose wingspans were more than a metre. Of course, once I was done with my photo shoot, I helped out again with the cattle…a reasonable distraction, I would argue. hj
